Sinharaja

Sri Lanka's last remaining primary tropical rainforest and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Discover Sinharaja

Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Sri Lanka’s last remaining primary tropical rainforest and one of the country’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Covering approximately 11,000 hectares, this dense and untouched jungle is home to an incredible variety of endemic flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and eco-tourists.

The forest is a sanctuary for rare and endangered species, including the Sri Lankan leopard, purple-faced langur, giant squirrels, and numerous amphibians and reptiles. Bird enthusiasts can spot endemic species such as the Sri Lanka blue magpie, red-faced malkoha, and Sri Lanka junglefowl, among many others.

Exploring Sinharaja is an unforgettable experience, with winding trails, towering trees, and cascading waterfalls creating an immersive jungle atmosphere. Guided treks take visitors deep into the forest, offering a chance to witness its diverse ecosystems, medicinal plants, and hidden wildlife up close.

One of Sinharaja’s unique features is its incredible canopy layer, where dense tree cover filters sunlight, creating a humid and thriving microclimate that supports a vast range of life. The forest also plays a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s ecosystem, acting as a natural water catchment area that helps regulate climate patterns and sustain nearby river systems.
